“Ten years ago I could never have imagined I’d be doing this,” says Greg Pal, 33, a former software executive, as he squints into the late afternoon Californian sun. “I mean, this is essentially agriculture, right? But the people I talk to – especially the ones coming out of business school – this is the one hot area everyone wants to get into.”

He means bugs. To be more precise: the genetic alteration of bugs – very, very small ones – so that when they feed on agricultural waste such as woodchips or wheat straw, they do something extraordinary. They excrete crude oil.

Unbelievably, this is not science fiction. Mr Pal holds up a small beaker of bug excretion that could, theoretically, be poured into the tank of the giant Lexus SUV next to us. Not that Mr Pal is willing to risk it just yet. He gives it a month before the first vehicle is filled up on what he calls “renewable petroleum”. After that, he grins, “it’s a brave new world”.

Mr Pal is a senior director of LS9, one of several companies in or near Silicon Valley that have spurned traditional high-tech activities such as software and networking and embarked instead on an extraordinary race to make $140-a-barrel oil (£70) from Saudi Arabia obsolete. “All of us here – everyone in this company and in this industry, are aware of the urgency,” Mr Pal says.

What is most remarkable about what they are doing is that instead of trying to reengineer the global economy – as is required, for example, for the use of hydrogen fuel – they are trying to make a product that is interchangeable with oil. The company claims that this “Oil 2.0” will not only be renewable but also carbon negative – meaning that the carbon it emits will be less than that sucked from the atmosphere by the raw materials from which it is made.

This is my 2008 year end wrap-up. Many people wanted to know about my new Ghost Hunters Bible/Book of Ghosts. I will publish the book in 2009. I will combine both books into one book. What’s taking so long? There are several factors contributing to why the book is not published. I should not give out release dates until the book has gone off to the printers. I wanted to have the book printed in early 2008, but the task of combining the books together was cumbersome. Also, other factors in the delay include me taking a new job last April and the more resent state of the economy. Great job but it does cut into my book work. The work on the book is moving along. I believe this will be my best work to date and I am looking forward to its release. Look for the book first or second quarter of 2009 (crosses fingers).

I am currently sitting in front of my computer, scared witless. Any moment now I am going to be killed.

Today a friend of mine told me a story.

His aunt had taken care of him since he was a small boy, and she told him last night about how his parents died. He did a very fair imitation of her (I knew them both pretty well):

“They were doing mission work in some nasty little south american country when a man burst into the mission hospital one night, terrified out of his mind. He told them that his sister had been killed by a Muerto blanco, and that he was certain that it was coming for him next. What is a Muerto blanco? Apparently it was some sort of bogey-man, something like that dumb chupacabra or whatever. They called it the White Death or the White Girl, because it was the soul of someone who hated life so much that they came back in their shrouds to kill those who told of them.

The man had been told about the vengeful spirit by his sister hours before her death. It was a girl with dead, black eyes that wept bile. The thing moved without ever actually moving its legs, and it stalked its victims back to their homes. Now, if you weren’t already aware that this thing was following you, once it got back to your house, it would start knocking on your door…

* Once for you skin, which she’ll use to patch her own decaying flesh.
* Twice for your muscle, which she’ll gnash her teeth on between victims.
* Thrice for your bones, which she’ll make knives to pick her teeth and kill her victims.
* Four times for your heart, which she’ll wear around her neck.
* Five times for your teeth, which she’ll polish and keep in a box.

Hello /x/.

Recent events have unfolded with Project905, some are grateful, others are extremely dissatisfied. I am up for a challenge, however.

Most of you idle daily doing nothing; either working, perusing your education or simply wasting time, we’re all guilty. A change of pace is now coming for those of you willing to experience something that will change your life.

During this challenge, you will have to rely on everyone’s separate skills instead of your own. Basic instinct will lead you through this maze.

With this post is a picture, it provides one clue- the location. I will provide the others in a week’s time.

Some may call me unoriginal and a copycat, but unlike Project905 I will not study my subjects. The time is act is now, /x/, I know you’re interested.
